Google Search Console for Owners: Three Reports Worth Ten Minutes a Month

Google Search Console is a free tool that shows how your site appears in Google search. Most owners never open it, or open it once and feel lost. You do not need to understand all of it. Three reports, checked monthly, cover most of what a local service business needs.

Set it up once

You need to verify that you own your site, which your web developer or platform can usually do quickly. Once it is connected, data begins to build over the following days and weeks, so do not expect a full picture on day one.

Make sure more than one trusted person has access, so that the tool is not stuck with a former employee or an old agency.

Report one: Performance

This shows which searches led to impressions and clicks on your site, and on which pages. Look for the searches that bring people in and check whether they match what you actually want to sell. Notice pages that get many impressions but few clicks, which may need a clearer title or description.

Be careful with small numbers. A few clicks either way is not a trend.

Report two: Pages and indexing

This shows whether Google can find and include your pages. If an important service page is listed as not indexed, find out why. Common causes include a leftover setting that blocks search engines, a page that redirects oddly, or content that duplicates another page.

Do not panic over every notice. Some excluded pages are normal, such as thank-you pages you do not want in search results. Focus on the pages that should bring customers.

Report three: Experience and mobile issues

Google reports problems with how your pages load and behave, particularly on phones. Slow pages, buttons too close together, and text that is hard to read all show up here. Fixing the worst ones can improve how the site feels to customers, whatever it does for rankings.

Hand specific issues to whoever maintains your site with the exact page and message, so the fix is clear.

What to automate and what to decide

You can set up email alerts from the tool, and pull the key numbers into a monthly summary automatically. AI can help explain an unfamiliar error message in plain language, though check its advice against Google's own documentation before changing anything.

Deciding which searches matter to your business, and which fixes deserve time and money, stays with you. Data on what people typed is useful. It does not tell you what work you want more of.
