Good, Better, Best: How Three Options on a Quote Can Lift Your Average Job

When a quote arrives as a single number, the customer's only real choice is yes or no. When it arrives as three clear options, the question changes to which one fits. That shift is why many service businesses use tiered packages, and why it deserves an honest, careful setup.

What tiers actually do

A tiered quote gives the customer a way to say yes without feeling pushed into the most expensive choice or the barest one. It also gives you a way to present extras as part of a package rather than as upsells, which tends to feel less like a pitch.

We are not claiming a specific lift, because results depend on your trade, your customers, and how you present it. Test it on a portion of your quotes and compare the outcomes yourself.

Building the three options

The middle option should be the one you would honestly recommend for most customers. The lower option should be a real, acceptable solution that does the core job. The higher option should add things that genuinely matter: a longer warranty, better materials, faster scheduling, or a maintenance plan.

Name what is different in plain terms, and keep the list of differences short. If a customer cannot explain the difference between the tiers after reading them, they are too complicated.

Do not create a fake premium tier that nobody would buy just to make the middle look reasonable. Customers notice, and it damages trust.

When not to use tiers

Emergency repairs, where the customer just needs the problem fixed, rarely benefit from a menu. Neither do very simple jobs with one obvious solution. Forcing options on those makes you look like you are padding the quote.

Tiers work best on larger, considered decisions such as replacements, installations, and treatment plans, where the customer is comparing and thinking.

What to automate and what to decide

Your quoting software can present tiers in a clean layout, track which option each customer chooses, and send a follow-up reminder automatically. That data will show you over time which packages sell.

The pricing itself, the definition of each tier, and the decision to offer a discount or adjust a package for a specific customer stay with you. Those depend on your margins, your capacity, and your read of the situation, and no template knows any of that.
